A compendium of the pioneer contributions of the Soviet group headed by Pontryagin. Although primarily of historical interest, the first chapter is still an excellent introduction to the Pontryagin Maximum Principle.

The Mathematics of Games of Strategy: Theory and Applications, M. Dresher, Dover, 1981.
An elementary introduction to game theory. Accessible to senior or strong junior undergraduates.

Differential Games, A Mathematical Theory with Applications to Warfare and Pursuit, Control and Optimization, R. Isaacs, John Wiley, 1965.
Don't be put off by 19th century prose style or the formal treatment of theory. The heart of the book is a compilation of the RAND publications from which the subject of differential games grew. The book has many excellent examples that illustrate the difficulties and complexities that arise and that a satisfactory theory must take into account.

Differential Games: Theory and Methods for Solving Game Problems with Singular Surfaces, J. Lewin, Springer-Verlag, 1994.
A current version of the Isaacs approach to differential games. Many examples. Solutions to some of the problems studied by Isaacs but not completely solved by him are given.

The Calculus of Variations, N. I. Akhiezer, Blaisdell, 1962.
A very readable introduction. Omit the proof of the existence theorem; as simpler and less computational proofs are now available. The opening chapters of Cesari's book (I.2) also constitute a good introduction.
